Music was once akin to an “apprenticeship system” in which knowledge and technique were passed down from master to apprentice; the title of this album, “Master and Apprentice,” originates from the 16th and 17th centuries, a time when composers traveled throughout Europe, instructing other musicians and composers while honing their own skills. This album focuses on the great early Baroque composer Claudio Monteverdi, exploring both the vast legacy he inherited from his mentors and predecessors—such as Josquin des Prez, Mouton, and de Laure—and the influence he exerted on his own disciples, including Rigatti and Rossi. The ensemble performing “Sestina Music” was founded in Belfast in 2011 by Mark Chambers. True to the album’s theme of the “master and disciple” relationship, the ensemble has nurtured numerous talented performers over the past 11 years through a method of having young musicians study under experienced musicians. Their performances, which masterfully capture the evolution of musical styles from the 15th to the 17th centuries, are truly captivating.
