A vibrant new recording explores Flecha’s musical world, where theatricality and polyphonic refinement are in perfect balance In 16th-century Spain, while the masters of the Flemish school flourished in the royal chapel and polyphonic music flourished, secular music—retaining traces of the era when non-Christians lived there—also saw a unique expansion. Frech, a Catalan monk-composer active in the Kingdom of Aragon in the eastern Iberian Peninsula, composed polyphonic music in various languages while serving the daughters of Charles I (Emperor Charles V). In particular, the Spanish secular music known as “ensalada” (meaning “salad” in Spanish)—with its humorous, alluring, and dynamic content—possesses a flavor unlike any other, and has been performed by many early music singers to date. This new recording by four up-and-coming singers active on the Iberian Peninsula offers a rich interpretation that allows listeners to enjoy both the clear, accessible delivery that effectively conveys the flavor of the lyrics and the thrilling musical development. It allows us to once again appreciate the depth of Renaissance music unique to Spain—which differs from the polyphonic works of composers from other regions, such as Palestrina, Lassus, and Gabrieli—and allows us to once again appreciate the depth of Renaissance music unique to Spain, which offers a distinct flavor from the polyphonic works of composers from other regions.
