Exquisite Scarlatti, Woven from a Period Keyboard French harpsichordist Frédéric Haas, based in Belgium, launched his independent label HITASURA after releasing numerous acclaimed recordings on Calliope and ALPHA. He says he was captivated by the world of Scarlatti 40 years ago after being deeply moved by a performance by Scott Ross he heard on the radio. As the first solo album on his independent label, he has recorded a carefully curated three-disc set of the composer’s sonatas (HSP002), after the recording, his love for Scarlatti only deepened, and he felt compelled to further explore the composer’s complex style from various angles. This album focuses on one of the 13 manuscripts containing a series of sonatas that Scarlatti is said to have written one after another for the Queen of Spain in exchange for her covering his gambling debts. Haas allows us to vividly savor the masterful compositional skills that Scarlatti attained in his later years through the beautiful sound of period instruments he has cherished and played for many years. Her touch, which conveys a deep love for the composer, is natural and unhindered; even in fast-paced music, she never rushes, playing each note as if cherishing it, yet with such skill that the music never feels slow. In the slower movements, the beautiful tone of Emsch’s renowned instrument shines particularly brightly, allowing the listener to deeply appreciate the joy of hearing the harpsichord.
