It’s hard to believe that any of these works were ever forgotten! Devos’s masterful singing brings these magnificent coloratura arias back to life While Italian bel canto works and Wagner’s operas have enjoyed the spotlight, 19th-century French opera remained somewhat in the shadows until recently. However, since the beginning of the 21st century, it has rapidly regained its prominence, vividly rekindling the momentum that once drove the opera world across all of Europe. While there are no shortage of legendary masterpieces being revived today, this album features solo performances by Jody Devos—a renowned singer of the new generation who has contributed significantly to the rediscovery of these lesser-known 19th-century vocal works—carefully selected pieces for coloratura soprano from the works of key composers such as Auber, Meyerbeer, and Thomas—among other major composers—that are specifically designed for the brilliant coloratura soprano. While some pieces—such as the “Song of the Shadow” from *Dinora*—have been masterfully performed by renowned singers past and present, including Moffo, Sutherland, and Damrau, the majority are rare works that are seldom recorded. These include *Auber’s* *The Devil’s Share*, which features the 18th-century castrato Farinelli as the protagonist, and *The Lost Jewel*—a little-known work by Adam, the composer of the ballet *Giselle*, which also inspired the album’s title—are among the tracks. While many of these pieces are so rare that they are virtually impossible to hear elsewhere, Devos’s expansive vocal delivery ensures that each piece captivates the listener with a presence that rivals even the finest Italian operas. The Brussels Philharmonic, led by Blues, provides excellent support with a powerful performance that perfectly captures the works’ charm. This album reawakens our appreciation for the appeal of Romantic French music and reignites our curiosity to explore unknown musical treasures. Naxos Japan
