Following the first release (ALPHA776/ NYCX-10256)—which garnered high praise worldwide for its recording of works such as the “Jupiter”—this second release features a program of major works: Symphony No. 40 in G minor, the only minor-key symphony among Mozart’s late symphonies, along with two works for which autograph scores survive in Paris (the “Don Giovanni” Overture and Piano Concerto No. 23). The soloist for the concertos is Andreas Steier, a leading figure in the world of the fortepiano. Surprisingly, he has not recorded many Mozart concertos; this is his first new recording in a long time since the four concertos (Nos. 9, 17, 18, and No. 19) released by Teldec at the end of the 20th century—this is a long-awaited new recording! The elegance of his interpretation, rich with ornamentation based on the performance practices of the time—including improvisations as basso continuo heard throughout—shines ever more brilliantly. Each section of Le Concert de la Loge—who reportedly studied the autograph scores with Steier and incorporated their findings into their performance—offers an interpretation rich in the subtleties unique to period instruments. Under Chauvin, who conducts while playing the violin, the ensemble’s ambitious sense of unity vividly conveys the depth and power of each work. Note that the version used here includes the clarinet part. As reflected in the subtitle “Twelve-Tone Technique”—daredly added to Symphony No. 40 based on the chromatic motifs of the final movement (reportedly solicited from the audience at one of their concerts and selected by the ensemble members)— we are once again struck by Mozart’s avant-garde vision, glimpsed through a thorough reexamination of the work’s true nature.
