Description:
Kurt Weill, a German composer known for his collaboration with Bertolt Brecht, was originally a student of Ferruccio Busoni. Before meeting Brecht, he composed works in the late Romantic style that bordered on atonality. This 1924 Violin Concerto, dedicated to Joseph Szigeti, is a highly original work that serves as both a tribute to Busoni and reflects the influence of cabaret music, a genre he favored in his later years. His “Symphony No. 2,” written ten years later, was composed around the time he decided to go into exile in Paris. It was premiered in Amsterdam by Bruno Walter and the Concertgebouw Orchestra; although it was enthusiastically received by the audience at the premiere, critics were divided, with some pointing out its similarities to the masterpiece *The Threepenny Opera*. Featuring Hungarian violinist Tamás Kocsis and Jack van Steen, who currently serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Ulster Symphony Orchestra. Naxos Japan
