One of TOCCATA’s popular series, featuring a collection of lesser-known works, is the complete symphony collection by Bulgarian composer and conductor Emil Tabakov. This seventh volume includes his “Symphony No. 9” from 2015 and his “Concerto for 15 String Instruments” from 1979. Symphony No. 9 was written as a work of pure music that explores the limits of the orchestra’s expressive capabilities. Although it is not programmic, as is often the case in his works, the turbulent orchestra evokes a society in turmoil, while the melodies of the solo instruments sound like a voice celebrating human dignity. The opening movement features a majestic Adagio, followed by the dynamic second movement, a Scherzo. After a serene Largo, the final movement—which begins with a leisurely theme—transforms into a fierce and turbulent Allegro moderato. The result is a magnificent work that faithfully upholds classical form. Although the “Concerto for 15 String Instruments” is an early work, it is an energetic piece in which the virtuosic techniques of each instrument stand out. Naxos Japan
