Ivan Klinger was born in 1818 in Serts, near the Kherson Oblast in Ukraine. He preferred the Western-style guitar and left behind original compositions—as well as arrangements of works by other composers—that incorporated balalaika playing techniques and elements of Russian folk songs. It is not well known what kind of musical education Klinger received, but after enlisting in the military at the age of 18, he rose to the rank of Chief of Staff. However, in 1847, he was ambushed by forces in the Chechen Republic, captured, and imprisoned. Although he was released in 1850, the writings he produced during his captivity serve as valuable sources for understanding Klinger. This album features various works by Klinger, including his masterpiece “The Poor Branch,” performed by British guitarist James Akers. The “Fantasias,” which feature multiple melodies as themes and showcase brilliant technique and free-flowing development, are all a delight to listen to.
