Description:
This is the fifth release in the “#bruckner2024” project—an initiative led by the CAPRICCIO label and the International Bruckner Society to record all versions of Bruckner’s symphonies by 2024, the 200th anniversary of his birth. This release features the first draft (composed in 1873) of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3, which has the greatest number of different versions among his symphonies. The score is based on the Novak edition. Among the various drafts of the Third Symphony, the first draft is the longest, and it features the most motifs borrowed from Wagner’s operas—the very source of the work’s “Wagner” nickname—giving it a unique charm. However—and this may seem hard to believe today—the Vienna Philharmonic, after rehearsing for the premiere, declared the work “unplayable,” and the premiere never took place. Although the first draft is sometimes considered “disorganized” or “compositionally underdeveloped” compared to later revisions, there is strong appreciation for the fact that Bruckner’s innovative ideas are preserved in a more original form, and opportunities for performances and recordings are steadily increasing. The performance by Markus Poschner and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra adopts a brisk tempo, particularly in the faster movements, evoking a sense of youthful vigor. In contrast, in the slow movements, the tempo is deliberately slowed, creating a subdued emotional atmosphere and a sense of hesitation about moving forward. Compared to the running times (23:59/18:53/06:09/16:17) of the Inbal/Frankfurt recording—which marked a turning point in the reevaluation of the first draft of Symphony No. 3—there are notable differences, particularly in the first two movements, suggesting that this is a performance with a significantly different artistic vision. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note by Yutaro Ishihara (musicologist and member of the International Bruckner Society).
