A collection of Reger’s organ works performed by Gerhard Weinberger, the organist whose recording of the “Complete Organ Works of J.S. Bach” on the cpo label won the German Record Critics’ Award. Volume 8 features a collection centered primarily on excerpts from “52 Easy Chorale Preludes, Op. 67,” a work that holds a significant place among Reger’s organ compositions. In May 1901, Reger told his friend, the organist Karl Straube, that he intended to “write 30 preludes based on famous chorales,” and this project eventually evolved into a collection of 52 pieces. Although the title includes the word “easy,” these pieces are by no means simple to perform; they are characterized by a rich, full-bodied sound, lavishly infused with the intricate counterpoint so characteristic of Reger. Reger himself took pride in the fact that this work was on par with the many chorale preludes composed by Bach. The album also includes other masterpieces such as “Four Preludes and Fugues” and “Variations and Fugue on ‘O Head, Covered in Blood and Tears.’” Weinberger performs on two types of organs built during the era when Reger was active.
