Description:

Del Campo: A Little-Known Spanish Composer of the Early 20th Century Conrad del Campo was a Spanish composer who wrote 14 string quartets (including one lost work and one unfinished piece) during his lifetime. While performing as a violist with the Quarteto Francés string quartet, he composed his first eight string quartets during the early part of his career—from 1903 to 1913, after graduating from the Madrid Conservatory—and completed the remaining six during his later years, from 1942 to 1952. The Quartet No. 3 included here has a curious history: although the Cuarteto Francés announced its premiere in 1908, the composer abandoned the work for some reason, and instead, the premiere of Quartet No. 5—another work included on this recording—took place. This recording is based on the latest critical edition. While there have been previous recordings of the No. 5 by ensembles such as the Brodsky String Quartet, this is the world premiere recording of the complete six-movement version, including the original fourth and fifth movements, and this is also the world premiere recording of the No. 3. Both works possess a slightly unsettling and unstable sense of tonality characteristic of the late Romantic period, yet they are fascinating pieces featuring richly varied musical ideas and an instrumental approach shaped by the composer’s own experience as a performer. Formed in 1996 by members who won first prizes at the Paris and Lyon National Conservatories of Music, the Diotima String Quartet is an ensemble that, despite some changes in its lineup, continues to perform at the highest level, focusing primarily on contemporary works. Here, too, they reveal the appeal of these little-known works through performances that demonstrate a deep empathy with the music. Naxos Japan
