Leading figures at the forefront of the European early music scene shed light on the true nature of a composer who flourished in Renaissance England, a country with a strong affinity for Italian music. In the 16th century, England was one of Europe’s leading musical powers. Toward the end of that century, the innovative music of Italy—the new center of musical activity—began to attract the attention of the English as well. John Coplario (Copellario), born around 1570, was a British composer who epitomized that era. After traveling to Italy, he began publishing works under the Italian-sounding name “Coplario” rather than his birth name, John Cooper, and continued to contribute significantly to cultural exchange between the two regions—for example, by composing instrumental ensemble pieces based on the vocal works of his Italian contemporaries. This program brings together contemporary Italian and English music in both instrumental and vocal music, and through a carefully curated program—which pairs Coplario’s ensemble arrangements with the original vocal works—this fascinating program explores the extent to which Italian Renaissance music served as a breath of fresh air for the flourishing British music scene of the late 16th century. In addition to the viola da gamba ensemble Hathor Consort, which continues to make unique contributions based in Belgium—a powerhouse of early music—the vocal parts feature Marnix de Kat, who has also demonstrated exquisite ensemble skills with groups such as Collegium Vocale Gent and Capilla Flamenca, and featuring Harry van der Kamp, a bass whose work as a soloist has garnered significant attention.
