A unique collection of late works by the viola da gamba master Marain. From the cutting edge of the French music scene—the pinnacle of vitality and sophistication! Malan Marais, one of the foremost masters of the French Baroque, was a virtuoso violist and conductor of the Royal Opera. His virtuosity—praised as “playing like an angel”—is clearly evident in the five collections of viol music he published intermittently from his youth through his later years. At the same time, two years before he retired from the music scene following the publication of his final viol collection in 1725, he also released a collection of chamber music comprising three substantial works: “Scales,” “Sonatas in the Style of Marais,” and “The Bells of the Church of Sainte-Geneviève-du-Mont in Paris.” In contrast to the five viola da gamba collections—which were thoroughly French in style and strictly focused on the viola da gamba—these three pieces were written for a trio featuring the viola da gamba, basso continuo, and violin. With works such as the “Sonata in the Style of Marais,” which reveals a self-portrait-like intent, and can be seen as a compilation of “another side of Marais.” All three pieces—including the expansive “Scale,” in which musical ideas based on each note of the do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do scale unfold freely—are substantial and challenging works; however, in the hands of the three virtuosos of Les Tambours—who are based in France and have recently released a string of acclaimed albums on the Flora label—the music is truly vibrant. The ingenious musical moments that take your breath away at every turn keep you endlessly captivated, making it impossible to stop listening as you move from one piece to the next. The richly varied development of “The Bells”—which was also featured in the film *The Morning We Met*, starring Marais—is unparalleled. Together with the performers’ detailed commentary on each piece (the Japanese edition includes a Japanese translation), this album is poised to become the new definitive recording of this unique collection.
