Bach (1685-1750)

Description:

A great performance! Unaccompanied Violin by Giuliano CarmignolaFour years after his masterful performance of "Unaccompanied Violin" for Deutsche Grammophon (three years at the time of recording), Giuliano Carmignola has recorded another "unaccompanied" work, the complete cello suite for the ARCANA label. The arrangements are by his friend Marco Serino, a member of I Musici and Carmignola's collaborator for 20 years. Carmignola was so impressed with the arrangement that he worked on it during a lockdown with the help of his cellist friend Mario Brunello, just before the worldwide pandemic of the new Corona virus. Since the cello and violin are tuned one octave and five degrees different, the arrangement is basically transposed up five degrees. Also, in No. 5, as in the cello, the fourth string is scordatura, which is one note lower than the cello. In No. 6, which is said to have been written for the 5-string cello piccolo (strings 2 through 5 are tuned exactly one octave below the violin), the original key is used, and only the passages where the low C string is used are played an octave higher so as not to disrupt the flow of the music. This allowed the violin to have a lighter expression, resulting in a suite for unaccompanied cello that is very different from the cello version, but is sung beautifully with the freedom of expression that only the violin can provide.Carmignola's unique liveliness in bringing the work to life is a major attraction. The arranger, Marco Serino, is also a soloist on "Ennio Morricone: Cinema Suite" (A495/NYCX-10268). Naxos Japan
