The Ural Ballet, a pioneer of a new era in Russian ballet, presents its new production of *Paquita*! The story is set in the Zaragoza region of Spain under French rule during the Napoleonic era. Lucien, a French officer, meets the beautiful Gypsy girl Paquita and falls in love with her at first sight. Inigo, the Gypsy chieftain who has long harbored feelings for Paquita, is consumed by jealousy. He conspires with Don Lopez, the governor of Zaragoza who hates French rule, to have Lucien killed, but… The ballet *Paquita* was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1846, choreographed by Joseph Mazilier, to great acclaim. Marius Petipa later re-choreographed it as his debut work in St. Petersburg, and it was staged by the Imperial Russian Ballet in 1847. This production by the Ural Ballet faithfully restores Petipa’s choreography while staging all three acts in an unprecedented, original style. Act I, in which the romance between the Gypsy girl Paquita and the French officer Lucien begins, is presented in the style of 19th-century classical ballet; Act II, in which the lovers face a crisis, is staged as a scene from a 20th-century silent film; and Act 3—in which the secret of Paquita’s birth is revealed—is set within a contemporary ballet company, creating a unique structure. The performance concludes with the “Grand Pas Classique,” the pinnacle of classical ballet and the signature piece of *Paquita*. Set to an orchestration featuring an impressive and varied use of percussion, the Ural Ballet’s dancers perform with dynamic energy, and the elegant solos by Japanese dancers Miki Nishiguchi and Tomoa Terada are not to be missed.
