Description:
Handel's masterpieces that sound as powerful and vivid as they did in the 18th century! Among Handel's choral works, the great works in which the orchestra with brass and percussion creates a magnificent sound were popular even during the Romantic period, and many of them were revived and performed to great acclaim in the 19th century. Hervé Nichet, a brilliant player at the forefront of the European classical music scene, gives a poignant performance of the work, showing that its power is not only effective even if we return to the performance style of Handel's lifetime, but can even have an impact that surpasses that of modern instrumental performances. Two years after the composition of "Messiah," Hervé Niquet presents the "Dettingen Te Deum" from 1743, written to celebrate the British victory in the War of the Austrian Succession, and the "Coronation Anthems" (composed for the coronation of King George II in 1727), including "Zadok the Priest" still performed at the royal ceremonies of the British Royal Family. The coupling, however, is noteworthy for the size of its composition, which is close to that of the first performance! The remarkable thing is the size of the orchestra, which is close to that of the first performance! The large orchestra consists of a total of 35 chorus members, 20 strings including 2 double basses, 5 oboes each in 2 parts, 6 bassoons, 8 trumpets, and 2 sets of timpani. The performance is truly overwhelming, with front-line virtuosos such as Madouf, a master of the 18th century-style natural trumpet without finger holes, on the brass, and Jeremy Papaserzio on the woodwind, who has been cooperating with Nichet since the recording of "Fireworks at the Royal Palace," including the reproduction of instruments. From the poignant intensity of the fanfares accompanied by the unique resonance of ancient instruments to the exquisite interplay between chorus and instrumental music, there is a strong sense of presence here and there in the interpretation that will leave the listener in a state of shock. This is a masterpiece of the new era that shows once again how well Niquet and Handel work together. Naxos Japan
