Cherubini in Stuttgart, 1959 Among the conductors of the latter half of the 20th century, Celibidache was undoubtedly one of the greatest and most intensely charismatic figures. He refined his interpretations of works to the very limit and devoted extensive time to rehearsals until he achieved a sound that satisfied him; his performances were of the highest possible caliber while simultaneously possessing the unique intensity characteristic of live performances. Although Celibidache, guided by his own unique philosophy influenced by phenomenology, consistently maintained that his music could not be conveyed through recordings, he did consent to broadcast recordings. Thanks to this, countless music lovers and musicians around the world have been deeply moved by his performances. This CD is one such broadcast recording, captured live in a radio studio. The two pieces selected for this program were among Cherubini’s particular favorites, creating a program rich in contrast: Haydn’s work, characterized by delicacy and transparency, and Tchaikovsky’s dramatic piece, featuring wide swings in tempo and dynamics. While he does not adopt the extremely slow tempos characteristic of his later performances with the Munich Philharmonic, his signature style is evident even within the tightly structured interpretations—such as in the grand introduction of Haydn’s first movement and the eerie rhythm marked by the timpani in the middle section of Tchaikovsky’s second movement. Furthermore, the explosive power of the fortissimo passages is characteristic of Cherubini in his prime. This recording has been newly remastered from SWR’s master tapes, and although it is in monaural, the sound is exceptionally clear and easy to listen to. Subsequently, following the acclaim he received for his performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 at the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra’s 25th-anniversary concert in June 1971, which was met with critical acclaim; from 1972 through 1977, he effectively served as the orchestra’s principal conductor, elevating it to one of Germany’s leading ensembles. *The Japanese-market edition includes a Japanese liner note by Atsushi Suzuki.
