Samuel Barber, an American composer best known for his “Adagio for Strings,” was also an accomplished baritone with formal training, and the numerous art songs he composed have become an essential part of the repertoire for singers in the English-speaking world. At a time when many American composers of Barber’s generation were strongly influenced by experimentalism, Barber set himself apart by pursuing traditional harmony and melody. This two-disc album, curated by Dylan Perez—a London-based art song accompanist—features all of Barber’s works published both during his lifetime and posthumously, including numerous world premiere recordings. Ten singers perform the pieces best suited to them, with Perez providing piano accompaniment for all tracks; the Navarra String Quartet provides the accompaniment for “Dover Beach.” Naxos Japan
