Taisei Yano, a pianist from Tokyo, graduated at the top of his class from the Santa Cecilia National Conservatory of Music in Rome and went on to further his studies at the Lucerne Music Center in Switzerland. Originally a modern piano performer, she was so moved by the sound of Mozart’s violin sonatas performed by Giuliano Carminola and Andrea Marcon in 2001 that she began playing the fortepiano as well. Today, she is active as a performer who plays both the modern piano and fortepiano. Yano had long held a deep affection for Schubert’s music, but feeling that she could not fully express the Schubert she envisioned on a modern piano, she made up her mind and commissioned Christopher Clark to build a replica of the Conrad Graf piano that Schubert owned in his later years. Using the instrument, which was finally completed 10 years after the order was placed, he began recording the 11 sonatas that Schubert completed. This is the second volume, following his previous release featuring the 16th and 18th sonatas. Anyone who thinks period instruments sound mild will be surprised by the intensity of the opening notes of No. 19. The dramatic fluctuations created by the tight tempo—with a total playing time of approximately 31 minutes—truly live up to the description of this recording as an “homage to Beethoven.” In contrast, Sonata No. 7—whose outer movements are marked “Allegro moderato”—features a performance grounded in a bright and serene mood. The melodic beauty one expects from the young Schubert and the rhythms of traditional dance forms add a touch of brilliance throughout. For this recording, instrument maker Christopher Clark was present during the session himself, drawing at times even storm-like sounds from a six-pedal replica of the Graf piano and showcasing its diverse expressive capabilities. The recording, which captures the vividness of that sound, is a must-listen for Schubert enthusiasts and lovers of historical pianos alike. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note written by Yasuyo Yano herself.
