Description:
The Romanian composer Radu Paradis studied piano at the Cherniutsi Conservatory (then in Romania, now part of Ukraine) from 1941, but left Cherniutsi in 1944 due to the war and moved to Bucharest, where he studied with the famous teacher Florica Muzychesk at the Conservatory and immediately attracted attention with his concert appearances as a pianist. In 1954, he began working as an assistant at the Film Academy of the National Theatre of Caragiale in Bucharest, and in 1963 he became a lecturer there. He left behind a large number of works of different character, including stage music, symphonies, and vocal music. This album contains three pieces: a piano concerto, a violin concerto, and "The Little Magic Flute," based on a Romanian folk tale, originally written as incidental music for an animation and later compiled into a symphonic suite. The Piano Concerto was premiered by the composer himself and was highly praised by audiences and critics alike. It begins with a first movement colored by light rhythms, followed by a quiet second movement and a final movement that effectively uses the rhythms of the Romanian folk dance "Joc din Oas". The Violin Concerto is also a work that is said to have been strongly influenced by the 2001 terrorist attacks.The meditative andante of the second movement is especially concentrated in Paradis's thoughts, and the final movement is humorous, with fragments of Romanian folk dances and other quotations. This piece is also a tribute to Mariana Silb, who was the concertmaster of the I Musici Ensemble for many years and premiered this piece. Naxos Japan
