One of the works that defined the fame of Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber and was widely performed until the 18th century was the "Eight Violin Sonatas" published in Nuremberg in 1681. Biber is best known for his "Rosary Sonatas," composed around 1674, which are said to be a compilation of the violin playing techniques of the time, but the "Eight Sonatas" are no less technical. Biber has succeeded in synthesizing the high level of technical difficulty, artistic content, and compositional skill in this collection. Bulgarian-born Plamena Nikitasova is a violinist who has gained recognition for her recordings of German Baroque music, and Les Elemens is an ensemble from Basel that specializes in performing works from the 17th and 18th centuries.
