[Gardiner’s Lifelong Masterpiece, Part 3: *The Coronation of Poppea*, Is Here!] Set in Imperial Rome, this story follows Poppea—the mistress of the tyrant Nerone (Nero)—as she enlists the help of Cupid to eliminate those who stand in her way and ascend to the throne as empress. Poppea, wife of the Roman general Ottone, schemes to win Nerone’s affection to further her own ambitions. First, she has the troublesome philosopher Seneca put to death, then exiles Ottone and Empress Ottavia from the country. She thus secures her desired status as Nerone’s consort and receives the blessings of both the court and the gods. In 2017, to mark the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth, Gardiner launched a major project titled “Monteverdi450” and conducted a concert tour visiting 16 cities around the world from April to October 2017. Among these, he achieved the remarkable feat of performing the complete cycle of Monteverdi’s opera trilogy in nine cities: Bristol, Venice, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, and New York. Gardiner, who made this concert tour a reality, is now widely known for his performances of Bach and Beethoven; however, Monteverdi is the composer who served as his starting point, and the English Baroque Soloists were originally named the Monteverdi Orchestra. Considered the first opera in history to draw its subject matter from history rather than mythology or the Bible, *The Coronation of Poppea* is a masterpiece from Monteverdi’s later years. The two surviving manuscripts contain only the vocal parts and the bass line, making it a work known for the considerable freedom it affords performers. Hana Brashikova, who sings the title role of Poppea in this production, is a soprano who specializes in Baroque repertoire, including works by Bach. Here, she confidently brings to life this extraordinary villainess, exuding a powerful presence. The singing of the men at her mercy is also a highlight. Gianluca Bratt’s earnest performance as Seneca is also well worth a listen. Under Gardiner’s baton, a superb concert performance unfolds, featuring a cast of accomplished singers and the English Baroque Soloists. Naxos Japan
