Ochird Classics' 200th release is a collection of works by leading British composers. Not only is the selection of music typical of England, where choral music is flourishing, but the album also commemorates the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth in 2022. Vaughan Williams' "Five Mysterious Songs," placed at the beginning of the album, is an arrangement for chorus with baritone accompanied by strings and piano. This is the composer's own arrangement, and this version is the world premiere recording. Veteran baritone Roderick Williams, well-known for his English songs, was the soloist. Lennox Berkley's "Variations on an Anthem by Orlando Gibbons" sung by Andrew Staples is also recorded for the first time in the world. The piece was premiered at the Oldborough Festival some 70 years ago and was praised by Britten as a "lovely piece." Warlock's popular "Capriole Suite" follows, and the concert concludes with "Aged Hibari," a surprising arrangement in which the chorus sings the orchestral parts. Naxos Japan
