A collection of piano works by composer Malcolm Dedman, born in London in 1948 and currently living in South Africa, Dedman began composing on his own at age 12 and eventually took formal violin and singing lessons. His compositional style is influenced by a variety of influences, including Bartók and Messiaen, as well as the rule-oriented Seriel music and South African music. In Search" (1984) begins with a pummeling first movement, followed by a meditative second movement, and a third movement with a Messiaen-like melody that seems to be asking a question. The "Four Kinds of Love" is a work that is in keeping with Dedman's Bahá'í doctrine. Although rhythmically difficult to play in some parts, the piece is filled with memorable melodies. The third sonata, subtitled "In Memory of an Angel," was written in 2021, only a few months after the death of his wife, Morris Paxton. Naxos Japan
