Description:
Don Banks (real name: Donald Oscar Banks) is an Australian composer. He studied with Matthias Saber as a young man and, influenced by his mentor's commitment to jazz, immersed himself in jazz himself. In the 1950s he was secretary to conductor Edward Clarke at the London Contemporary Music Center, and from 1967 to 1968 he served as president of the Society for the Promotion of New Music (SPNM), among other important positions. He also served as an educator and trained many young musicians. This album contains his chamber and vocal works. The album features a wide variety of Banks' works, including a horn trio with acute drama and lyricism, and "Five Northern Folksongs," which has a familiar melody. Tirade" is a 1968 work based on a poem by Australian poet Peter Porter (1929-2010).The music, consisting of a huge percussion ensemble of about 30 instruments played by three percussionists, harp, and piano, sounds like improvisation, but in fact all the notes are written in the score, and the mezzo-soprano's Sprechgesang-style singing is intertwined with this to create a dramatic music.
