Volumes 1 and 2 feature a collection of witty miniatures, centered on the suite *The Family of Babies*—which reveals the influence of Debussy—the richly folkloric *Sirandas*, and *Sirandinha*, which is easy to play even for beginners. Volume 3’s “Poems of Brazil” and Volume 4’s “Simple Poems,” along with the majestic grandeur of “Brazilian Bach No. 4” and the salon-style, sentimental charm of “Romantic Waltz,” strongly convey the composer’s distinctive style. The “Practical Guide” included in Volumes 5 and 8 is a collection of piano pieces arranged by Villa-Lobos based on collected Brazilian folk songs, incorporating educational considerations; these are brilliant works designed to achieve a high dramatic effect. Volumes 6 and 7 clearly convey Villa-Lobos’s creativity and imagination, which transcend the boundaries of Western classical music. The collection includes pieces inspired by urban landscapes and nature, as well as works requiring avant-garde techniques; the ballet music *Amazonas*, in particular, reveals surprisingly experimental elements. The performer, Sonia Rubinsky, is a Brazilian pianist. Born to a Polish mother and a Lithuanian father, she gave her first recital at age 5 and made her orchestral debut at age 12. After studying at the Campinas Conservatory of Music, she went to study in Israel, where her musicality was praised by Rubinstein, whom she met there; she is now active in North America and Europe. This recording of the Complete Piano Works of Villa-Lobos has been highly acclaimed internationally, winning a Latin Grammy Award in 2009. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note by pianist Aki Shimizu, Vice President of the Japan Villa-Lobos Society.
