The Madouf brothers and others join in! The King of France, Louis XIV, continued to consolidate his hegemony over all of Europe during his long reign, which was marked by the expansion of Corelli's works into a large ensemble. The Catholic capital of Rome, Cardinal Mazarin's former workplace, and places like the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi, named after the medieval French king, Saint Louis, were no strangers to Louis XIV. In fact, a concert dedicated to Louis XIV was held there in 1686, and this album, recorded in Versailles by a group of French antiquarian instrumentalists, aims to recreate that musical celebration in Rome. The program includes works by Corelli, who was famous throughout Europe and had a great influence on French composers, as well as a serenata by Merani, a composer who served the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. The main feature of the program is that it is performed in a large ensemble based on records and testimonies of the time. Corelli's trio sonatas for chamber orchestra have been performed in large ensembles since that time, and there is even a record of Corelli conducting a large ensemble of 100 players.Here, the Baroque ensemble features a rather large string ensemble with a full bass ensemble and, depending on the piece, trumpets and timpani, vividly recreating the splendor of the celebrations in the "Eternal City". The brass section includes the Madoff brothers, who play natural trumpets without finger holes as they did in those days.
