Beethoven Takes Center Stage with Two Innovative Masters of Early Music! Bruno Coxe, who continues to delight us with numerous concept albums that incorporate the latest scholarly research while mastering a variety of early low-to-mid-range string instruments—with the cello as his primary focus—has recorded Beethoven’s sonatas, a dream he’s held since his teenage years. The fortepiano is played by Maude Gratton, who has earned the deep trust of many early music performers, including Philippe Herreweghe, and who also serves as keyboardist for *Les Basses Réunies*, the ensemble led by Coquelin. The fortepianos used on this album are a reproduction of a Stein instrument—believed to be from the maker of the first fortepiano Beethoven ever owned—for Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2, and an original Broadwood instrument—from the maker the composer is said to have owned until the end of his life—for Sonata No. 3. While it does not appear that these were chosen strictly to match the composition dates, hearing the differences in tone is a great pleasure. The appeal lies in the interplay between Cox’s vibrant cello and Gratton’s piano—known for its rich expressiveness—as both musicians deliver performances with such dramatic dynamics that they seem to push their instruments to their limits; the forceful strike at the beginning of No. 2, followed immediately by a soft passage, is so striking it takes your breath away. There is not a trace of stiffness in the performance; it is so free and expansive that it evokes a sense of refreshing clarity. Furthermore, the distinctive timbre unique to period instruments serves as an accent, resulting in a truly delightful album. It would be no exaggeration to say that this recording stands as a new addition to the lineage of legendary recordings of these masterpieces left behind by so many great artists.
