Description:
This is a rare reissue of all recordings made by Natan Mirshtein, one of the most important violists of the 20th century, for AFRS (Armed Forces Radio Service), as well as American recordings from 1944-50. Natan Mirshteyn was born in Odessa (Odessa), Ukraine, on the big day of 1903. He began playing the violin at the urging of his mother, became a student of Pyotr Stolyarsky at the age of seven (David Oistrakh was his junior), played Glazunov's Violin Concerto under the composer's direction at the age of 11, and in 1916 studied with Leopold Auer at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, especially with fellow students In 1921, he met Horowitz in Kieu (Kiev) and formed a duo, but left Russia in 1925 and never returned. Schoenberg, Berg, Hartmann, and others attended Mirshtein's concerts in Vienna, and when Ysaye met Mirshtein in 1926, he reportedly said, "There is nothing I can teach you.In 1928 he emigrated to the United States, where he became a citizen in 1942, but after World War II he continued his activities with bases in Paris and London. Tracks 1-11 are all recordings made by Milshtein for AFRS (Armed Forces Radio Service), a broadcasting service established by the U.S. Army during World War II, and include Brahms' Sonata No. 2, Ravel's Habanera form pieces, and Wieniawski's Etude Caprice are valuable because they were never later recorded in a studio. The CD also includes V Disc recordings made for American soldiers, Voice of America radio recordings, and a 1950 RCA recording of 18-23 arranged for orchestra by Leroy Anderson. *The CD is based on a reissue of the LP recordings. Some sources claim that the Brahms Sonata No. 2 was recorded in November 1943, but we confirmed with the label that it was recorded in 1944. Naxos Japan
