Description:
Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness, one of the leading American composers of the 20th century, eschewed the European avant-garde and instead incorporated musical elements from Armenia, India, and the Orient in many of his works. This second collection of piano works includes "The Star of Hermes," dedicated to the poet and mystic Francis Bacon, "Fantasy on an Ossetian Melody," a dance based on a folk song from the Caucasian region of Ossetia (Ossetian), dedicated to a Greek-American pianist, and the "Piano Concerto," a piece with a complex sound pattern and a fascinating melody. The piano sonata "Journey to Arcturus (star shining in the night sky, Alpha Leo)", "Komachi", which uses his favorite Japanese theme, and "Greek Rhapsody", which is placed at the end of the album, are included. The album contains works that only Hovhaness could produce. Continuing from the first collection (CDS-7701), pianist Alessandra Pompili, who is known as a good interpreter of Hovhaness's works, gives a close listen to his mysterious music, including world premiere recordings.
