Description:

This is a collection of works by Russian-born Lithuanian composer Živuokule Martynaitė, who was born in Russia in 1973 and is based in New York City. This second recording for ONDINE features three works for string orchestra written over the past three years, the first of which, "Nunc fluens. Nunc fluens. Nunc stans" is taken from the words of the ancient Roman philosopher Boethius: "The passing present is time, and the remaining present is eternity. The piece was written in April and May of 2020, when the spread of the new coronavirus was causing anxiety and fear around the world, and the slowly unfolding music seems to express the spirit of seeking "eternity" that transcends the world's condition at the time. Composed between November 2020 and March 2021, "Ex Tenebris Lux" is composed for 8 violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos, and 2 double basses. It begins with a restrained minstrel song, then moves on to a variety of techniques, and ends with a glorious string sound that evokes a sense of hope. Sielunmaisema" (Finnish for "landscape of the heart") is a work for solo cello and string orchestra requiring a minimum of 21 players. The composer himself, who has two very different cultural identities, Lithuania and the U.S., depicts "the landscape that is still in my heart, no matter where I live. Like Vivaldi's work, it uses the four seasons as its motif, but the movements are interrelated, rather than each piece expressing the characteristics of each of the four seasons. Also, the cello plays a leading role, which gives the piece a more mellow sound. Naxos Japan
