Description:

The Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate Kuchal present a box set of Lyatoshynsky’s complete symphonies! Boris Lyatoshynsky was a composer who made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian symphonic music in the 20th century. He mastered the piano and violin from an early age and is said to have composed his first piece in his mid-teens. He later studied composition under Reinhold Glier at the Kyiv Conservatory, and after Glier’s death, he completed the unfinished “Violin Concerto,” Op. 100. From 1920, he taught composition and orchestration at his alma mater; he later taught for a time at the Moscow Conservatory as well, and from 1956 onward, he held a leadership position in the “Union of Soviet Composers,” dedicating himself to the development of the music world. Silvestrov was among his students at the Kyiv Conservatory. As a composer, he wrote works across a wide range of genres, including five symphonies, symphonic poems, chamber music, two operas, vocal music, choral works, piano pieces, stage works, and film scores. His early works were romantic in style and influenced by Glier, but by the mid-1920s, he began composing works inspired by Western European atonality. From 1929 onward, he turned his attention to traditional Ukrainian music and devoted himself to works that combined folk melodies—derived from the research of the 19th-century ethnomusicologist Mykola Lysenko—with the most modern harmonies and forms of the time. His five symphonies are considered monumental works in the history of Ukrainian symphonic music. Anyone interested in the music of Bartók or Shostakovich will likely enjoy them immediately.
