Description:
A collection of timeless masterpieces by Bergamo’s renowned lute musicians, conveying the subtle nuances of the works through exquisite sounds In 16th-century Italy, while masters such as Palestrina and Marenzio were composing intricate polyphonic music for voices, instrumentalists were beginning to establish musical styles unique to their respective instruments. Before the emergence of Baroque-era composers such as Kapusberger and Piccinini, Terzi—a virtuoso of the lute based in Bergamo, northern Italy—left behind a body of works for the lute that can be considered the culmination of Renaissance solo instrumental music. Although his life remains shrouded in mystery compared to the popularity he enjoyed during his lifetime—as inferred from the existence of published scores bearing his name and the large number of manuscript copies preserved around the world—the composer’s profound musical knowledge and sensibility are clearly evident in the music itself, which spans a wide range of forms, from dance pieces of various eras and solo arrangements of French polyphonic chansons to and preludes. Florent Marie, a renowned French virtuoso who performs with various ensembles specializing in medieval and Renaissance music, plays an 8-course lute crafted by his father—a period instrument maker—and offers a deeply evocative and meticulous interpretation of the rich variety of Terzi’s music, which reads like a comprehensive catalog of Renaissance styles. This is a valuable release, not least because it is an album composed entirely of works by Terzi—a rarity by any measure. Another highlight is the natural, unpretentious sound of the strings, which showcases the exceptional engineering of the Carpe Diem label—a label beloved by world-class lute players such as Toyohiko Sato and Lee Santana.
