A wonderful project that traces the little-known threads connecting the extraordinary Jezualdo to the lute Born in Slovenia in 1987, Bor Zlijan is a musician of the new generation who not only plays the lute but also plucked historical instruments such as the vihuela and the oud, while also mastering jazz improvisation on the guitar. The theme of his second solo album is, surprisingly, Gesualdo. Gesualdo, who was also the ruler of Venosa, is a composer best known for his scandalous early life—including the alleged murder of his unfaithful wife—and his later years, spent secluded in his castle composing unconventional madrigals. However, historical accounts indicate that he was also a highly skilled lute player. Toward the end of the 16th century, through Alfonso II, Duke of Ferrara—the father of his second wife—he received an instrument that would become the prototype of the archlute from Alessandro Piccinini, a master lutenist of the same age. This album features an instrument believed to be similar to the one from that period and includes not only lute works from that era but also arrangements by Bor Zlijan himself, based on manuscripts that transcribe madrigals—including those by Gesualdo—into lute notation. Beginning with the opening piece by Piccinini, the selection includes numerous works employing chromatic techniques reminiscent of Gesualdo, providing ample material to reflect on their little-known connection.
