Description:
Beginning with the opera *Das Rheingold*, followed by *Die Walküre* and *Siegfried*, the Sofia Opera in Bulgaria has impressed audiences with its talent with each new production—and now presents the final installment of its *Ring* cycle. Hagen, the son of Alberich, persuades his half-brother Gunther to give Siegfried—who has stopped at the Gibichung estate during his travels—a potion to make him forget his past, and to betroth him to his sister, Gutrune. Enraged by this betrayal, Brünnhilde vows revenge on Siegfried. However, Siegfried, who had gone hunting with the men of the estate, is murdered by Hagen and returns to the hall as a corpse. Upon learning the truth, Brünnhilde piles firewood on the banks of the Rhine, sets it ablaze, and throws herself into the flames. The flames consume even Valhalla in the heavens and the gods themselves, and the overflowing waters of the Rhine swallow the Ring—the source of all calamity—bringing *The Ring of the Nibelung* to its grand conclusion. Like the previous three works, the stage design for this production of *Götterdämmerung* at the Sofia National Opera is characterized by lighting based on the primary colors of red, blue, and green, and is permeated by Plamen Kartakov’s pop-inspired staging concept, which features mysterious geometric patterns and cones scattered throughout. Here, too, singers clad in costumes reminiscent of characters from special-effects monster movies or rock stars take the stage by storm. In this production, with the exception of Georgiev as Alberich and Petar Buchkov as Hagen, the principal cast has been completely renewed, and the final chapter of this grand cycle is brought to a close by the passionate performances of a fresh cast of singers, led by Yordanka Delilova as Brünnhilde.
