Description:
The second installment from the video recordings of Gardiner’s life’s work—the “Monteverdi 450” world tour of his three-part Monteverdi opera cycle—is here: *The Return of Ulysses*! Penelope laments that her husband, King Odysseus, has not returned home despite his victory in the Trojan War. Furthermore, she is tormented by three suitors who have taken up residence in the palace during her husband’s absence and behave with utter impudence. Ulisse, however, aided by the goddess Minerva, returns to his homeland in ragged clothes. Penelope, having resigned herself to the belief that Ulysses was dead, decides to accept the suitors’ proposals and declares, “I will marry the man who can draw my husband’s bow and shoot the arrow the farthest,” but no one is able to draw Ulysses’ powerful bow. Then Ulysses, disguised as a beggar, arrives and draws the bow with ease, but… In 2017, to mark the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth, Gardiner launched a major project titled “Monteverdi450” and conducted a concert tour visiting 16 cities around the world from April to October 2017. Among these, he achieved the remarkable feat of performing the complete cycle of Monteverdi’s opera trilogy in nine cities: Bristol, Venice, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, and New York. Gardiner, who made this concert tour a reality, is now widely known for his performances of Bach and Beethoven, but Monteverdi is the composer who served as his starting point; indeed, the English Baroque Soloists were originally named the Monteverdi Orchestra. This recording of *The Return of Ulysses* is taken from the second performance of the trilogy cycle, staged at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice—a city closely associated with Monteverdi—as part of that tour. Julio Zanasi, who played Apollo in the previous production, *Orfeo*, sings the role of Ulysses; Lucile Richard, who made a strong impression as the Messenger, takes on the role of Penelope; and Hana Brashikova, who sang Eurydice, plays Minerva. The high standard of singing that earned such acclaim in *Orfeo* is on full display here as well. Furthermore, under Gardiner’s baton, a cast of accomplished singers and the English Baroque Soloists deliver a magnificent performance. Naxos Japan
