Selim Palmgren, who studied under Busoni and mastered overwhelming technical skill, went on to become one of the leading composers and pianists in the Nordic region. Although Palmgren left a significant mark on 20th-century piano music, opportunities to perform his works are relatively rare; with the exception of “Three Nocturnal Scenes,” all of the pieces included in this fourth volume of his Complete Piano Works are world premiere recordings. The album features his “Trilogy,” which combines Impressionist and Romantic elements; the “Three Fantasies,” influenced by jazz and born from his fulfilling life in the United States, where he resided from 1921 to 1926; and the beautiful melodies incorporating Scandinavian folk songs—a hallmark of his work—which can be heard throughout. Joni Somero is one of the most active pianists in contemporary Finland. He studied under Georges Chiffra and Michael Ponti, possesses a wide-ranging repertoire centered on technically demanding works, and has made over 100 recordings for various labels. Naxos Japan
