Guarneri’s father was an Italian immigrant who loved music; he named his children Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, and Verdi. Camargó Guarnielli’s real name was Mozart, and he demonstrated precocious genius in piano performance and composition, which he learned from his mother; however, he later began signing only “M.” instead of “Mozart” and adopted his mother’s maiden name, Camargó, as his surname. Guarneri was influenced by the nationalist ideas of Mario de Andrazi, a Brazilian writer, poet, folklorist, and musicologist, and sought to innovate Western classical music using the language of Brazilian music. Unlike traditional Brazilian choro, most of his choro pieces are written in a concerto style consisting of three movements or three sections. Even the piece titled “Celesta (Serenade)” is essentially a choro. You can enjoy the nostalgia (saudade) that permeates the slow movement, marked “Carmo” (gently), as well as the fiery passion of the fast movement. Performed by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kalabchevsky, who earned great acclaim for his complete symphony cycle of Villa-Lobos. The soloists are also members of the orchestra. *This disc is part of “Brasil em Concerto,” a major project led by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in which Brazilian orchestras perform and record approximately 100 works composed from the 19th to the 20th century. *The Japanese edition includes a liner note by conductor Yusuke Kigumo, President of the Japan Villa-Lobos Society.
