Nicholas Collon opens a new chapter for the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra – and his eagerly awaited first disc is Sibelius's last symphony. On 8 September 2021 Nicholas Collon, born in London in 1983, took up his post as Chief Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra – the first conductor from outside Finland to hold the position in the orchestra's history since its founding in 1927. Collon studied viola, piano and organ, and played the viola in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. In 2004, together with Robin Ticciati and other musicians of his own generation, he founded the Aurora Orchestra, whose hallmark is performing from memory and standing up, and built it into one of the most admired and popular ensembles of its kind as its Principal Conductor. He has served as Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest in The Hague (2016–21) and Principal Guest Conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne (2017– ), and appeared with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in 2019. He first conducted the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in March 2017, and on 2 May 2019 was named its next Chief Conductor – a remarkably swift appointment. For his first disc Collon turns to Sibelius, music that runs in the orchestra's blood and a repertoire in which his own conducting teacher, Colin Davis, excelled. He conducted the Seventh Symphony and King Christian II at the Finnish Independence Day gala concert on 6 December 2021, and this recording dates from the same period. Together with Pelléas et Mélisande, recorded slightly earlier, the disc is notable for the warm texture of the strings and the beauty of the quiet passages, played in shadowed, half-lit colours. Recording, editing and mastering were entrusted to the veteran engineer Enno Mäemets, widely admired for the quality of his work.
