Description:
The fourth installment of “#bruckner2024.” Here comes Symphony No. 4, a popular piece nicknamed “Romantic.” This recording uses the Second Revision (commonly known as the 1878/80 version), which is the most widely used score for Symphony No. 4. It is based on the edition edited by Benjamin Korstvedt as part of the New Bruckner Edition (Korstvedt NBG III/1:4/2, published in 2019). The recording also includes the movement known as “Volksfest” (People’s Festival), which served as the finale when Bruckner completed the Second Draft in 1878; by using the CD’s program function, listeners can hear the Second Draft in its original form. Once again, Poschner maintains a generally tight tempo (with the playing times for each movement being nearly identical to those on the Wand/Berlin Philharmonic recording, differing by only about one minute in the first movement), while employing a wide range of dynamics and tempo variations to create a dramatic musical interpretation. Furthermore, the performance time for “Volksfest” is considerably faster than the 17:57 on the Fulsha recording, making a side-by-side comparison particularly interesting. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note by Yutaro Ishihara (musicologist and member of the International Bruckner Society). *Please note that due to the long running time of this CD (83 minutes and 16 seconds), it may not play properly on some players. [About #bruckner2024] This is a project by the Vienna-based label “Capriccio,” supervised by Paul Hawkshaw—a leading authority on Bruckner and a professor at the Yale School of Music—to record all versions of Bruckner’s symphonies by 2024, the 200th anniversary of his birth. The project plans to use the scores from the New Bruckner Edition (NBG), a new complete edition currently being published for a significant number of works. Markus Poschner will conduct the entire series, with the orchestra consisting primarily of his regular ensemble, the Linz Bruckner Orchestra, supplemented by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Upcoming releases include the first draft of Symphony No. 3 (the 1873 version, based on the Novak edition) in the fall of 2022, followed by the first draft of Symphony No. 8 (the 1887 version, based on the New Complete Edition edited by Hawkshaw) by the end of the year. This series is sure to be one that Bruckner fans won’t want to take their eyes or ears off of. Naxos Japan
