This album features a collection of 11 sonatas written by the early German Baroque composer Matthias Weckmann for the Collegium Musicum (a private music society) in Hamburg. The autograph score of this work is currently preserved at the Lüneburg City Library; with the exception of two sonatas, all are written for a combination of four instruments and basso continuo. Every piece features showstopping moments for all instruments, and the trombone and cornetto (Zink, a woodwind cornet) in particular are required to perform with a level of technical skill that could even be described as grueling. The music creates striking contrasts through sudden changes in tempo, rhythm, and range, ensuring that even when listened to in their entirety, the pieces never sound “similar.” Please enjoy the masterful performances by Roland Wilson, a leading authority in this field, and the musicians of Musica Fiata.
