To record enthusiasts, Antal Dorati is likely best known as the conductor of the first-ever complete collection of Haydn’s symphonies and the Stravinsky “Three Great Ballets,” which are renowned for their outstanding recordings. It is not widely known, however, that Dorati studied composition under Kodály in his native Hungary and left behind a considerable body of work, ranging from instrumental pieces to symphonies. The opera *The Chosen One*, included here, is Dorati’s only stage work; it features a text based on philosopher Martin Buber’s (1878–1965) *Elijah*, set to music that is rich and profound, reminiscent of Richard Strauss. The world premiere in Kraków was conducted by Martin Fischer-Dieskau, son of the renowned singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Martin, a conductor and scholar, was also a beloved student of Drati and, as a keen interpreter of the work, served as the driving force behind this first recording. The title role of Elijah is sung by Polish-born Tomasz Konieczny. A singer known for his performances in Wagner’s works, he delivers a commanding vocal performance here as well. Naxos Japan
