The first installment of Gardiner’s lifelong magnum opus—*Orfeo*—is now available from the video recordings of the “Monteverdi450” world tour of his three-part Monteverdi opera cycle! After his wedding, Orfeo journeys to the Underworld in pursuit of his wife Eurydice, who died after being bitten by a snake. He captivates Charon, the ferryman, with the power of music, reaches Pluto, the ruler of the Underworld, and pleads for permission to bring his wife back. With the intercession of his wife Proserpina, Pluto grants Orfeo’s request on the condition that he “must never look back until he has left the underworld”—but… In 2017, to mark the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth, Gardiner launched a major project titled “Monteverdi450” and conducted a concert tour visiting 16 cities around the world from April through October 2017. Among these, he achieved the remarkable feat of performing the complete cycle of Monteverdi’s opera trilogy in nine cities: Bristol, Venice, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, and New York. Gardiner, who made this concert tour a reality, is now widely known for his performances of Bach and Beethoven; however, Monteverdi is the composer who represents his musical roots, and the English Baroque Soloists were originally named the Monteverdi Orchestra. This recording of *Orfeo* is taken from the second performance of the trilogy cycle, staged at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice—a city closely associated with Monteverdi—as part of that tour. Christian Adam (as Orfeo), a Baroque singer who has garnered attention primarily for his performances of works by Handel and Haydn, and Hana Brásiková (as Eurydice), who is well-known in Japan for her guest appearances with the BCJ, lead a cast of accomplished singers and the English Baroque Soloists in a magnificent performance under Gardiner’s baton.
