Description:

Gardiner's lifetime project - the first "Orfeo" from the "Monteverdi 450" world tour of the Monteverdi Opera Trilogy. After the wedding, Orfeo goes to the underworld in pursuit of his wife Euridice, who died from a snake bite. He charms the ferryman Caronte with the power of music, and then reaches the Lord of the Underworld, Plutone, and begs his permission to bring back his wife. Pluto, with the help of his wife Proserpina, grants Orfeo's wish on the condition that he never look back until he has left Hades... In 2017, on the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi's birth, Gardiner will present "Monteverdi 450. Monteverdi450" and launched a major project, a performance tour of 16 cities around the world from April to October 2017. Among them, nine cities-Bristol, Venice, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, and New York-performed a zycles of Monteverdi's opera trilogy, a remarkable achievement.Gardiner, who made this tour possible, is now widely known for his performances of Bach and Beethoven, but Monteverdi is his original composer, and the English Baroque Soloists, formerly known as the Monteverdi Orchestra, was named after him. This recording of "Orfeo" is from the second three-part cycle performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the city associated with Monteverdi, as part of that tour. The English Baroque Soloists and the vocalists, led by Christian Adam (Orfeo) and Hana Vlasikova (Euridice), both well-known in Japan for their guest appearances with BCJ, are a group of talented singers. Gardiner will lead the English Baroque Soloists in a wonderful performance. Naxos Japan
