Description:
The essence of Rameau’s orchestral music, blossoming at Versailles—born of the “new ways of life” of the 18th and 21st centuries! This album showcases the boundless experience of Marc Minkowski—who has now transcended the realm of period instrument performance to pursue a multifaceted career—applied in the finest possible way to 18th-century French music, which could be considered the very foundation of his artistry. Minkowski and the Louvre Palace Orchestra earned high praise in 2003 for their album dedicated exclusively to Rameau’s orchestral works (*Symphonie Imaginaire: Imaginary Orchestral Works*, ARCHIV label); this new project can be seen as a revival of that success. When the performances of Mozart’s Da Ponte opera trilogy, scheduled for January 2021, were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this recording—made using the time and venue originally set aside for those performances—displays a level of quality that is truly a testament to the solid experience of conductor Minkowski and the strong bond of trust he shares with the Louvre Palace Orchestra, renowned for its rich musicality. From Rameau’s early masterpiece of stage music, *Les Indes galantes*, to his late, unconventional work *Le Chevalier errant*, which marks his entry into the Classical era, the selection showcases pieces that demonstrate just how far ahead of his time he was as a master of orchestration. The colorful sound, produced with overwhelming unity by masters of period instruments, features wind instruments that were still rare at the time—such as the piccolo and clarinet—while the interplay of the natural horn and bassoon creates a rich, full-bodied resonance. Renowned soloists, such as oboist Emmanuel Laporte and harpsichordist Yoan Moulin, also participate. On the four vocal tracks, the rising star of a new generation, Senpei—who also performed with Minkowski on the Alpha label’s Rossini collection (ALPHA791/NYCX-10301)—adds a special touch with his superb acting and vocal skills. The liner notes, featuring numerous beautiful photographs (the Japanese edition includes Japanese commentary, such as a translation of the conductor’s own introduction), are a hallmark of the ChâteaudeversaillesSpectacles label.
