Germaine Tailleferre was the only female member of the French group of six composers. She left behind many stylish works rich in neoclassical style and spirit, and was praised as a talent comparable to Poulenc and Milhaud. However, her music was rarely performed, and her forgotten works are finally being rediscovered in recent years. This album by Nicholas Horvat is the first of three collections of Tailleferre's piano music, and has been described by the composer's granddaughter as "as if Tailleferre herself were performing these works. The album includes works from his youth, such as the enchanting "Romance" and "Harmonic Exercises" written as a student, and "Small Overtures and Old Airs," which testify to his thorough study of the works of Italian and French 18th century composers, as well as the glittering, tuneful "Pavilion in Alsace" written for the 1937 Paris International Exhibition. From "Pavillons in Alsace" to a wide variety of works, including world premiere recordings, this collection offers a fascinating taste of Tailleferre's work. Naxos Japan
