Pancho Vladigerov is one of Bulgaria’s leading 20th-century composers. He is a pivotal figure in Bulgarian music history, having been a founding member of the Bulgarian Association for Contemporary Music in 1933. This two-disc set, his third collection of orchestral works, features pieces that draw heavily on Bulgarian folk songs and those from neighboring European countries, including “Impressions of Ryulin,” which became his final orchestral composition. “Impressions of Ryulin,” which depicts the hilly landscape of Sofia, Bulgaria, is a vibrant piece of music that was premiered in 1973 under Vladigerov’s own baton. Furthermore, “Jewish Poem” employs Jewish melodies from his mother’s heritage and, amidst a somber atmosphere representing the persecution Jews endured in Bulgaria during World War II, also portrays their spirit of defiance. “Dramatic Poem” is also a work imbued with political significance and is also known as “Song of Peace.” “Six Exotic Preludes,” an orchestration of piano pieces he had composed earlier, incorporates folk songs and, taken as a whole, forms a compelling work with the cohesion of a symphonic suite. Similarly, the “Three Concert Pieces,” also based on original piano works, possess an experimental quality—perhaps because they were written near the end of his life—and feature short pieces with evocative titles. In addition, Vladigerov’s diverse body of work is conducted by his son, Alexander (1933–1993), who delivers a magnificent performance to ensure that his great father’s music is passed down to future generations.
