200th Anniversary of His Birth! The Complete Orchestral Works of César Franck, Including Rare First Recordings To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of César Franck, one of Belgium’s leading composers, a 4-CD set containing his complete orchestral works has been released by FugaLibera, a label based in the composer’s homeland. All orchestral works are performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, the city where Franck was born. Centered around the album featuring the symphonies and other works conducted by Arminck (FUG596) and the collection of orchestral works conducted by Rotto with Tiberkian on piano (CYP7612), this release also includes the complete recording of the symphonic poem “Expiation” conducted by Nicke (MEW1994/NYCX-10106)—which includes the “Orchestral Fragment” (also known as the Interlude, or sometimes referred to as the entire symphonic poem “Atonement” on its own)—as well as numerous new recordings by Blues and Madarash. While the performances on the previously released albums have all been highly acclaimed and are well worth listening to on their own, the highlight of this release is the first-ever recording of the first edition of “Atonement” (“Orchestral Fragment”), which was discovered by French music scholar Joël-Marie Fauchère after having been presumed lost. Due to its repeated, unusual modulations, this section was rejected and omitted during the premiere of the complete “Atonement,” and was replaced the following year with an entirely different piece; this recording allows listeners to hear the work in its original form for the first time. The album also features new recordings of two variations for piano and orchestra, composed when he was 12, and a piano concerto written at age 14, allowing listeners to truly appreciate the composer’s precocious talent. Incidentally, the Piano Concerto “No. 1” is said to have either been lost or to have been a fabrication by his father, who sought to boost his son’s reputation as a child prodigy; the truth of the matter remains unresolved to this day. It is also a delight that the album includes “Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue,” a popular piano piece orchestrated by Pierné. It’s a thoughtful touch that the album’s track order has been rearranged so that, with the exception of Pierné’s arrangement, all the works are presented strictly in the order they were composed. Being able to trace the evolution of his style and follow the process leading up to the creation of his masterpiece, the “Symphony in D minor,” is a major highlight of this album. Naxos Japan
