Description:

The mandolin, an important instrument of the 18th century, has been used in concertos by Vivaldi, Mozart's "Don Giovanni," Beethoven, Hummel, and other great composers, but its "sound of the time" has not been explored in depth to the extent that it is surprising, The mandolin. Like the guitar and harp, the mandolin had several golden ages in its history, and especially before the French Revolution, it was widely popular in Paris, London, and other large cities in Europe. This can be confirmed by the fact that many famous instruments and works from that period are still in existence. Raffaele La Rajone, who has been trying to approach such a situation from both the perspective of performance practice and research, and to reveal the historical face of the mandolin, which since the end of the 19th century has been obscured by the emphasis on its aspect as a folk instrument of southern Europe, will hold a recording session with Il Pomo d'Oro, a group of leading musicians in the field of ancient music instrumental performance. Raffaele LaLagione has recorded this groundbreaking collection of 18th century works with Il Pomo d'Oro, a group of virtuoso musicians at the forefront of ancient instrumental performance.Using three different types of ancient instruments (one of which was original at the time) and four important concertos from Vivaldi in the late Baroque period to Hummel on the eve of the Romantic period, the concertos will explore the true nature of the mandolin, which in the 18th century was as much in the limelight as the starring role on the stage as were the flowery opera singers. The composition is exquisite, highlighting how the mandolin interacted with other instruments and orchestras through the classical period, with overtures by Haydn, Galuppi, and other contemporaries. In addition to La Rajone, who also writes the commentary, the musicians include soloists such as Zefira Valova (violin), Marcello Gatti (traverso), and Francesco Corti (harpsichord), who also conducts. The soloists, including Francesco Corti (harpsichord), will perform the first half of the century works in a chamber orchestra, while the latter half of the century works with wind instruments will be performed with a larger number of players. The mandolin is not a special instrument, but a part of the context of ancient instrumental music, and this release is an excellent opportunity to experience it from various perspectives through solid performances.
