Master pianist Helmchen masterfully plays a 19th-century Bechstein, pursuing Schumann’s authentic sound! Composed in 1838 following *Scenes from Childhood* and *Kreisleriana*, the *Eight Novellettas* (meaning “short stories”) are, with the exception of No. 8, generally short pieces; yet together they weave a grand, fantastical narrative, representing a masterpiece from Robert Schumann’s creative peak. “Song of Dawn” was composed a few months before he suffered a mental breakdown and is said to be the last work he published himself; it is said to express through music the various emotions swirling within his heart at dawn. In addition to these works by Robert, the album includes three pieces from *An Evening of Music*, composed in 1835—the year Clara Schumann is said to have begun her romantic relationship with Robert. Using a 19th-century Bechstein piano from an era close to that in which they were active, Helmchen delivers a wonderful performance full of inspiration and varied expression. She not only allows listeners to fully savor the authentic sound of these works but also makes us realize anew the depth of their musical richness.
